CBD Oil and Diabetes

Diabetes is a known metabolic condition and it is known that oxidative stress and inflammation play critical roles in the development of diabetes and its complications.
CBD may help with inflammation due to its anti-inflammatory properties affecting Endocannabinoid system. Animal-based researches have found that CBD may help to reduce inflammation and indirectly increase insulin in blood.
The University of Nottingham conducted a study in 2016 which found that when CBD was used in conjunction with the cannabis compound THCV, it helped to increase insulin production and lower blood sugar in those with type 2 diabetes. GW Pharmaceuticals is currently developing a CBD THCV spray which could help with controlling blood sugar in those with type 2 diabetes.
It is believed that CBD oil interacts with CB1 and CB2 receptors. CB1 receptors are found in the brain, CB2 receptors are found in the immune system. It is the CB2 receptors that may impact pain and inflammation.
With these receptors, the cannabinoid CBD can affect inflammation and pain perception.
Many animal-based studies exist claiming that CBD might be a helpful in complications associated with diabetes and improve metabolic dysfunction but it is still in need of more research to actually confirm this notion.
At this point, there are no significant studies confirming CBD or CBD oil as a means of reducing high levels of blood sugar or controlling diabetes.
Does CBD interact with Metformin?
Metformin is a medication to help those with type 2 diabetes. CBD and metformin are both inhibitors of a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. It is important that if you are using metformin and CBD, you should consult your doctor and keep monitoring your blood sugar.
